Chemistry

AS and A Level (Board: Salters OCR)

Essential entry requirements:

Standard 6th Form requirements including B grades in Science AND Additional Science or B grade in Chemistry

Preferred entry requirements:

B grade in Mathematics.

Outline of course content:

If you are looking for a subject that is explosive, colourful and aromatic, then look no further than CHEMISTRY; a fun, practical science, which makes a real impact on the world in which we live. The course is designed to sustain and develop students' enjoyment of, and interest in, Chemistry. In Year 12, students will extend their GCSE knowledge into a more advanced study of Chemistry without the need for extensive mathematical skills. Students opting to complete the full Advanced Level qualification will extend their basic knowledge and explore the more mathematical aspects of Chemistry. Modules of work are assessed throughout the course and practical skills are assessed within the department by the completion of coursework. (The learning process is a blend of techniques including teaching with student interaction, self-learning studies, video support and group projects with presentations. Extensive individual/group experimental work is given a very high priority in order to complement theory and develop the experimental techniques required by a modern day chemist). Students are encouraged to develop good study skills with the guidance of the course leader. To support students, a wide range of resources are available on the school intranet in addition to the two course text books provided. Students will need to provide a lab coat and may also purchase their own safety glasses.
