As you know disaster hit Haiti at the start of this year and left hundreds of thousands of people in a state of chaos. With loved ones missing, no food or water and for many, no more homes, the terror did not end there. Violence started to spread through the place and children have been made extremely vulnerable. People are living in terrible conditions and depend on the care of others and will still need help in years to come. You can only imagine how the people over there were and are feeling, which is why we decided to use our school community spirit to raise money for those so much less fortunate than ourselves. Boy, you put so much effort and compassion into doing as much as possible for this cause! This included simply bringing in your loose change and individually creating your own ways to fundraise such as selling pop corn and pancakes, having a sponsored silence and famine and of course supporting the mufti day.
We have totalled up the final amount and we have raised over £2,800 which is incredible and we would like to say a massive heartfelt thank you to everyone for supporting this cause. However, for us it was more than the amount of money raised that meant so much and it was not the only point of the fundraising, it was to also acknowledge a disaster that had happened in our world and had severely affected people just like us. As Mr Cook said in his assembly, to believe we can change and help the way most people in our world live in such unjust circumstances, would be a wonderful thing to do. In just over a week you have proven that if people put their minds to it, a difference can be made.
It was also lovely to see the proud look on so many faces as you brought your donations to us, telling us the many ways you had helped to fundraise and the astonished look on some of the Year 9's faces who helped count the change, as all of it quickly began accumulate into such a large amount of money. You may have thought that the pennies you were donating were not going to make much of a difference but we can tell you from personally counting them that all together they quickly add up in pounds and helped enormously to create the amount raised.
All the money will ne donated to UNICEF for the incredible people who work hard to help children all over the world, and specifically at this moment, Haiti.
So again a massive, massive thank you to everyone
Maheva and Jena - Year 12
A note from one of the workers at unicef who visited Haiti shortly after the hurricane hit- "You may have heard countless stories of heartbreak, but also heroic stories of compassion. While so many people lost their lives, many were also saved thanks to the bravery of others.
Tragedies like this can also be a reminder of the resilience, strength, and character of the human spirit."
