A-Level Presentation Evening 2010

Twynham 6th Form celebrated its annual awards evening on earlier this month. This was to celebrate the students’ A-Level results and to award subject prizes in recognition of excellence in a range of areas. We are very fortunate in that these prizes are sponsored by local businesses and I would like to thank them for their valuable support.

We are very fortunate in the quality of our 6th Form students and the winners were very worthy winners indeed. What struck me this year was the sheer number of students and parents who attended; our 6th Form really has come of age. We couldn’t fit into the hall and had a wonderful evening at the Village Hotel. Drinks before and afterwards and entertainment by the students themselves during the proceedings made this an evening to remember. Thank you to Ed Pope, Marc Haynes and the “Man Choir” for letting us share your talent and for making us laugh.

This year saw record breaking results and we congratulate them for their outstanding success. Turning to the PRoe winners, first are two special award; one for Outstanding overall achievement and the other the Fireman’s’ Award for service to the community. The Fireman’s award is dedicated to the two men who lost their lives whilst serving their local community of Christchurch in 1987. It is sponsored by the local Fire Service.

The winners of the two special awards were:

Ambre Doherty: Outstanding Academic Achievement – sponsored by Reid Steel

Ambre was a very hard working and conscientious student. She was approachable, well-liked and popular.  She was very ambitious and had a real sense of determination in wanting to practice medicine and she has applied to university for this coming September.  Ambre has shadowed medical practitioners in cardiology and orthopaedics and spent one month shadowing in a surgery.

During her time in 6th Form Ambre's academic progress in all subject areas was outstanding.  In Biology, Ambre was determined to succeed at the highest level and was a perfectionist.  She was a Principal Student for Biology and helped out with open evenings, proving to be an outstanding example of an A level Biology student.

Ambre was also a Principal Student for French and had an excellent understanding of all the topics covered and she spent time reading and researching extra information.  She communicated effectively and she had strong opinions on many diverse topics.

In Chemistry, she demonstrated excellent organisational and practical skills during the coursework practical.  She also frequently asked questions demonstrating high level thinking skills.

In Mathematics, she approached her studies with enthusiasm and was tenacious in pursuing her understanding of each topic covered. She regularly contributed her ideas to class discussions and asked questions to further her knowledge. She had very good mathematics skills and this enabled her to access complicated calculation questions throughout the course.

Incredibly, Ambre has fewer GCSE's than other students as she studied in France during Year 11. However, she was one of the top 3 students in her year, gaining 4 A's at A level.
Congratulations Ambre and we wish you every success in gaining your place at university and for all that you do in the future.

Meta Paton: Fireman’s Award –sponsored by Christchurch Fire Service

It was an absolute pleasure to have someone like Meta in 6th Form. She was an extremely conscientious and highly motivated student who was very clear about her own abilities and strengths. She was an extremely popular member; well liked by her fellow students and teaching staff. She approached every day as a fresh challenge and would tackle everything that came her way. Meta should be praised for the way in which she balanced her studies with a very full extra- curricular timetable.

At 13, Meta joined St John Ambulance and since then has been on many duties including the London Marathon and the Dorset Steam Fair.  She regularly helps at meetings with younger members and a piece of publicity Meta wrote was used for the Eye Hospital in Jerusalem.  Moreover, through school she also worked with the Red Cross visiting primary schools, teaching first aid to children.

When Meta started 6th Form she decided that she needed a job that made a difference and she found herself a job in a care home. She conducted a research project into reminiscence therapy in her spare time to determine the effect on the day-to-day functioning of the residents.  After 9 months at the first care home she took a job working in a care home for people with mental illnesses. The majority of the residents suffered from dementia but Meta also met residents with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, alcoholism and Parkinson's disease.

During her gap year she has been working as a support worker in a boarding school for boys with Aspergers Syndrome.  Meta has decided to become a mental health nurse and has applied to university to start in September.
